In Generations: A Modern Oriental Residence by Chu and Hsu

Blending Tradition with Modernity in Multi-Generational Home Design

Discover how designers Hung-Sheng Chu and Pei-Wen Hsu harmonize traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary minimalism to create a home that transcends generations.

At the heart of the 'In Generations' project lies the concept of the extended family, a cherished ideal in Chinese culture that signifies familial unity and the perpetuation of collective memory. The design team, led by Hung-Sheng Chu and Pei-Wen Hsu, faced the intricate task of catering to the diverse aesthetic preferences of different age groups within the family. The elderly members yearned for spaces that reflected traditional Chinese classical beauty, while the younger generation leaned towards the sleekness of modern design. By embracing the philosophy of 'the dome-like heaven embraces the vast earth,' Chu and Hsu have skillfully crafted a modern oriental residence that marries the elegance of the East with the clean lines of modernism.

The residence's entrance sets a tone of opulence and harmony with a marble floor inlaid with motifs of circles, peonies, fish, and algae, elements rich in Chinese symbolism. This pursuit of wealth and harmony is further echoed in the walls adorned with colorful gilt, reminiscent of traditional Chinese window latticework. This motif seamlessly transitions into the woodwork on the ceilings above the social areas and culminates in the round walnut dining table, a representation of family unity. The design's strength lies in its reinterpretation of traditional elements through modern forms, using titanium-plated metal to outline silhouettes with a minimalist touch.

The fusion of Eastern and Western styles is evident in the material choices and craftsmanship. Walnut wood, a traditional symbol of affluence in Chinese culture, is used to evoke a sense of vintage sophistication. Meanwhile, modern materials such as black matte iron and crystal lighting fixtures are incorporated to complement the Chinese aesthetic, adding a contemporary and humanistic dimension to the space. The design team's innovative use of modern materials to articulate the essence of Chinese style results in a modern oriental ambiance that is both luxurious and understated.

The technical specifications of 'In Generations' reveal a meticulous approach to spatial design. Spanning 301 square meters, the residence was originally two separate units that have been merged to create an expansive social area. Strategic ceiling trim and a cleverly extended TV wall contribute to an illusion of increased space, achieving a visual effect that extends the living room horizontally. The design team's expertise is also evident in the structural solutions implemented to support the weight of a wall-hanging TV, ensuring both openness and privacy in the semi-open study room.

The project, completed in March 2023 in Taiwan, is a testament to the design team's ability to navigate the complexities of multi-generational living. By striking a delicate balance between the classical and the contemporary, Chu and Hsu have created a space that resonates with each family member's aesthetic sensibilities. The result is a warm and inviting home that serves as a canvas for the family's collective narrative, set against a backdrop of 'New Chinese' artistic design.

Chu and Hsu's 'In Generations' project has not only overcome the creative and technical challenges of designing for an extended family but has also been recognized for its excellence with an Iron A' Design Award in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award category for 2024. This accolade is a nod to the project's well-executed design that integrates professional standards and innovative solutions, ultimately contributing to the enrichment of the living experience across generations.
